Anyone been to Disney Land

Hi Guys

Hapy New Year

I am seeing my nuro next week and hoping that he changes his diagnosis from clinnically isolated to PPMS which will mean I can get my Critical illness payment. So with it I was thinking of taking the kids on a once in a lifetime holiday to Disney Florida (they are 8 & 4). I have looked at 2 weeks in June, in a decent hotel on site, but I am worried that the heat will be to much and knock me, but then I am also worried that my mobility may reduce if I leave it till later in the year. Has anyone been and has anyone any advice???

thanks

Ruth x

Not been so unable to advise other than enjoy yourself

Hi Ruth

I was in Florida in April last year & found the temp wasn’t too debilitating, of course the great thing about USA is how helpful they are if you do need any assisstance, especially the folks @ Disney. Go for it!

Hope you have a fantastic trip

I’ve never been but the heat would worry me. Of course inside there will be air con but take a look at expected temperatures for that time of year. I would also look at scooter or wheelchair hire. Even if your mobility is currently good I would think Disney Land would entail loads of walking and will be tiring. Will there be another adult to take the kids around so you can spend some time resting in the hotel? In terms of using a w/c or scooter, the US is great on accessability and I know that Florida has a very good reputation. In fact lots of w/c users go to Florida because it is so easy to get around. Good luck and hope you have a great time. Pat xx

Thanks for your replies

Yes I am going to ask a friend of mine, I couldnt manage last year with them pre MS let alone now lol.

I did speak to the travel agents about a scooter and fully intend to hire one, I have read that you can get a guest assistance passes as well so that should help, I am really nervous about going, but just keep thinking how much the kids would love it. I have chose a decent hotel so I can still have a treat  x

What a great idea Ruth. Research a wheelchair or scooter and keep up with the children. If you accept the consequences of being overheated you can plan accordingly with transport and recovery etc. I did the same one hot day last year when I took a scooter around the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens. Not quite Florida but hot enough. Thankfully I’d planned recovery time in an appropriate place. Best wishes Steve x.

my ate said he wants to take me so he can be my career and jump the queues he just like the disability card idea

Ha ha that is a benifit no queing :))) I have read how good the guest assistant cards are and when you are waiting for a ride you are in the airconditioned bit which should be of benifit.

Now all I need is the nuro to say he is going to diagnose PPMS this year and I can book it on the presumtion I will get my critical illness payment  x

Hi Ruth

I was there in aug 86, some of the parks and attractions stay open late, disney and epcot had big shows over a lake with fireworks and things happening after dark, so we would try to the indoor stuff while it was hot then be outside when it cooled down. I think we used to be getting back to the car about 22.00. im not sure if the late opening is all year round. The second time i went was about ten years ago during late september the temperature was nicer but hurricane katrina was too close for comfort. If i was going when your looking at I would use internet check average temperatures for the time your planning on going, find out what attractions the kids want to go to and if they open late go out a bit later, split the days into different levels of activity, the parks are huge with lots of distance covered, after a day chasing after mickey and minnie all over disney, spend the next day at a water park where you can rest a bit in the shade and keep a watch over kids having fun while you prepare yourself for the next big day. theres a lot to do so best to pace yourself.

If you can manage it, I would advise using a manual wheelchair just so theres no problems with flat batteries, or not being able to go out when you want while you wait for batteries to charge.

you will have a fantastic time I hope it all works out.

Matt
