Urine Infection Problems - superpubic catheter

Hi Everybody,

My Mum has a superpubic catheter fitted and keeps getting urine infections. The last urine infection she ended up in hospital and it turned into sepsis which broke my heart to see her in such a crippling state. How can these infections be stopped? Why is there no chuffing cure yet? Does anybody take D-Mannose? or apple cider vinegar?

Hi, I can easily understand how all this is worrying you…and your mum.

I`ve had an spc for around 4years. When we have a constant foreign object inside us, we can never be 100% free of utis.

The docs are reluctant to give anti biotics too often, as we can become immune to them.

But if they are serious enough to warrant hospital admission, then they do need treating.

I ensure I drink lots of fresh tap water…to keep the urine flowing well. I also have my spc changed every 4 weeks. Any longer than that and my tube starts furring up. If urine looks orange or dark, then more water needs to be drunk. Sometimes my urine smells quite strong. But I dont think that alone points to an infection.

I also take cranberry tablets, to help keep my bladder clean.

D Manoose is also a favourite thing to help avoid utis.

I hope things improve for your mum and you are a lovely daughter to show so much concern, bless you.

Hi Boudica,

Thank you for your reply, I’m going to try my Mum on some D-Manose and see if that helps. What part of your spc gets changed every 4 weeks? Inside and out? Do you use any specific cleaning products around that area when you shower? Do you think its having something foreign inside you that causes the infections or? My Mum started taking the cranberry tablets too, do you take D-manose alongside the cranberry tablets?

Thanks again

Hi again.

To answer your questions;

I use sanex in the shower and my carer gives my catheter hole and outer tubing, a good clean with senset. I get senset on prescription. It is a soapless cleaner.

The whole thing gets changed at change time ie both inside and out as it is one unit… When a new one goes in, there is a small balloon inside, which is filled with saline water, and this stops the catheter from coming out.

Before it is removed, the nurse uses a syringe to empty the balloon.

UTIs (bladder infections) happen for several reasons…one could be due to having a foreign body inside you. But they can happen for nothing. Some people are prone to them, more than others.

Finally, I dont take D-Manoose. I am lucky that I havent had many utis.

Hi Boudica,

Thank you for your reply :-). I don’t really know my head from my a*se today as my Mum is really weak, the sepsis infection knocked her out and with MS on top of it she is very tired.
