Failure to recognise loss of cognitive dysfunction - what to do?

My mother has had MS for over 30 years now. In recent years, we have noticed a significant deterioration in her cognitive function. However, she refuses to acknowledge this. We tried raising this with her consultant at her last appointment who referred her for a cognitive assessment but she refused to attend. We have since tried to call the Nurse Specialists at the Walton Centre but they refused to speak to us (my dad). Is there anything else we can do to try to get her help? Without any help, we’re not even sure if it’s her MS that is the cause or whether it could be something else entirely - if she weren’t diagnosed with MS, I’d probably suspect dementia. Some of the things we’ve observed are:

  • Making lots of mistakes at work

  • Getting confused about people are (mixing up her colleague with my wife in particular)

  • Forgetting recent conversations

  • Saying things that show a lack of emotion/sensitivity

hello, hmm, I can see why you are concerned.

I know the Walton…I was in there for a wek in December…wonderful hospital and staff…none of that help I know…

Perhaps Dad could speak to your mum`s GP and tell them of the problems.
