My wife who has had Multiple Sclerosis for a number of years is in constant pain. She has been to the pain clinic and had injections in her spine to no avail. She is on various pain killers but they have only marginal effect. A drug that was prescribed ‘Nabilone’ took the edge off the pain, however she can only obtain this from the consultant and from the hospital. The consultant was on holiday and she ran out, then and now suffering from withdrawal symptoms. The consultant is now back from holiday and made out a prescription for this controlled drug, I went to collect it from the hospital pharmacy to be told they haven’t got any and it would be months before they have any in stock.

I just wonder what would happen if drug addicts who are self inflicted and are prescribed methadone, what would happen if that ‘ran out’?

Now my wife tells me she will stop all the medication as she just wants to die. She says she has had enough.

Oh love! This is a terribly sad and I’m sure it should never have happened.

I see that you weren’t to know when the consultant would be away and therefore didn’t have enough nabilone in.

It seems to me that the pharmacy should ring round to find some for you.

If being without it has caused your poor wife to wish she was dead, then this MUST be sorted.

My advice is to ring your GP and tell them you are worried sick about your wife , who is in a terrible state.

Plead with them for help!

Can’t they borrow it from another hospital pharmacy? How about phoning consultants secretary and asking for a advice, explaining your wife’s desperate frame of mind? I’m so sorry, for both of you.

Thinking of you both.

The GP just refers to the hospital. They used to prescribe Nabilone but wont anymore. She has made an appointment with the GP and the earliest is November. I really feel everyone has let my wife down.

I am in contact with the consultant secretary who in fact goes the extra mile to help if she can. I asked her if she would ask the consultant to prescribe Sativex but he has said he is not familiar with the drug so won’t prescribe. Instead he will write to the pain clinic. All the time my wife is in considerable pain, she is on morphene patches but still in pain.

Oh fluffers and knickers!

Why wont they act NOW to save you and your wife`s mental state?

Grrrr!

Hello There

I am just wondering , have you investigated Stem cell treatment which has been proven in the UK to work. There is a clinic in Switzerland currently offering the treatment and success rate is around 89%.

Let me know if you need the details.

Kind regards

Abid

Hello everyone

I am not sure why not many people who has MS do not investigate other options outside the traditional school of medicine. My uncle had MS and it was terrible. It is like coping with slow death which we all could see coming. We investigated other ways and we found stemcell treatment which we never heard of before. We have seen a program, i think it was on BBC1 for someone who suffered with MS and was at late stage and he was treated at Bradford NHS hospital. He recovered fully. The NHS process was complicated as usual, however we found one Centre in Switzerland and we contacted them and he had the treatment which took about 5 hours. They took his blood and his fat and extracted stemcell and injected it back into him. it was remarkable, after 10 days he was improved and he could move. his consultant kept telling us that they research stemcell and no evidence that it is working. I say to all consultant , yes it does work and all MS sufferers should undergo stemcell treatment . IF it works then they will have a better live and if it does not work , then there is no side effect like medication. I am really upset that many of MS sufferers do not have the opportunity to be given the chance to take this treatment . (comment removed by moderator) I encourage them to search the Internet and read about stemcell rather than set there and rely on medication.

OK, Stemcell, you are new here.

Stemcell treatments have been discussed here quite a lot (look up HSCT), and they are not the universal cureall that you suggest.
If you take the time to do the research, you will find that the treatment is available on the NHS - if you qualify.
Over 65? forget it. (That’s me done for a start).
SPMS? Forget it. (That’s me done again).

So, if you are RRMS, younger, and recently diagnosed, you might be able to get it.
If you are not young, or your MS is progressive, stemcell treatment may not work at all, even if it is available to you.
If you want to take a chance and spend quite a few thousand pounds - that is up to you.
But please, do not make it sound like a universal treatment (let alone a cure).

So, I decided to research and sent an email to the supplier of Nabilone - Meda Pharmaceuticals asking if they had in fact run out of the drug. They replied the same day telling me that the 1mg capsules where out of stock because they are awaiting a new manufacturer to be approved, however, they do have stock of 250mcg.

So I rang the Consultants secretary requesting that he amend the prescription to this new amount. The secretary said that the doctor said that there was no need, just tell LLoyds Pharmacy that it’s in stock in this quantity. I did but the pharmacy said they need another prescription and will get in touch with the doctor, - ring tomorrow and we will let you know.

All this time my wife suffers, I am now losing the will to fight the system. I will go a little while longer but I’m getting really worn down.

Well, it’s 8 days…and I can imagine they have been VERY long days in deed for you both, since you first posted your problem.

But now you ARE getting somewhere, so please do hang on, it’s got to get better.

Still rooting for you chuck!!!

I went to see Lloyds Pharmacy who said they had rang the supplier and indeed I am correct they do have supplies of 250mcg. However this is not on the Hospital list so they need to get it on the list and they don’t know how long it will take. Also when it is on the list they will need a new prescription.

So really this is a never ending. I just wonder what would happen if the drug addicts no longer had access to methadone?

I get you hun.

You can’t get through to anyone who will actually DO SOMETHING for you.

All I can say is more gggggrrrrrsssss!

What about complaining to the health watchdog body?

So… last Sunday my oldest son decided to ring the pharmacy at the hospital, not LLoyds Pharmacy which is for out patients. He spoke with a senior pharmacist who showed concern, he requested my wife’s NHS number and the Consultant name who had made out the prescription and he said he would get back to my son.

The following day I got a call from Lloyds Pharmacy, they had the drug now and the prescription was ready.

Paul Daniels must have been involved?

Hurrah! Eureka! And everything else that`s a triumphant shout!!

Paul Daniel`s soul has done his work!
