recliner chairs

Anybody got a reccomendation?

Not a recommendation, as such, but just in case you didn’t catch it, Watchdog had a good piece on who to avoid! Great British Mobility, based in Weston Super Mare were using high pressure sales tactics to try to persuade elderly and vulnerable people to spend almost three or four thousand pounds on a chair that could be got elsewhere for about £700. So you have a ballpark figure to bear in mind - price should be in the hundreds, NOT thousands. Transcripts or replays of the Watchdog investigation can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3V5nR8mxt55m3p91fSJSsj6/great-british-mobility Hope you find something you want, but be careful. Tina

Can’t help but it’s a good question about recliner chairs, I sometimes wonder if one would help me get up a bit easier. Yes Tina, I saw Watchdog too and definitely something to bear in mind re the price, i would have had no idea how much to pay. Good luck looking for one. Cheryl:-)

hi maud

i work in a furniture shop,if it is a lift and rise recliner chair you are after which you can recline in and also lifts to nearly standing position then your local independant furniture shop should be able to help. i can recommend sherborne as a manufacturer with good guarantees too. cost wise you are looking at about a thousand pounds but with the ability to get the vat off about 800-900 pounds. try to get a dual motor type as the single motor ones are cheaper but its a lot of work for that one motor.

hope you get on ok

I certainly wouldn’t be buying one from any mobility site, that’s for sure, not really sure why anyone would, there are plenty in ordinary furniture shops. I don’t watch watchdog as I can’t stand 3 of the presenters and their mock outrage and the almost painful puns and stupid musical links.

Kim I’m not sure about the lift ones always think I’d be launched forward with nothing to grab hold of! I have seen one that I like, same manufacturer of a 18 year old chair that I have, which still looks like it did the day it was delivered, however reviews say the quality is not so high these days, I will look at Sherbourne expecting to pay what you estimate, just not sure I could get the VAT exemption , I thought furniture would not count as being specifically for the disabled…I shall try though! I Does your shop do VAT free for them?

Thanks Kim just looked at Sherbournes site, quite like the Bergan.leather would be good choice I’m partcularly interested in the construction, don’t want any more DFS,SCS,CLS disasters…strange how they all have three letter names!

Hi all, as with many other things, I feel it is best to be assessed by an OT for a recliner chair (with or without riser bit). Because this is another area where regular furniture salesmen dont understand the predicaments of someone with a physical disability, especially one that can progress further.

I know not everyone can get a chair via an OT, but before you buy, please speak to an OT, yeh?

I have recently got one which was bespokely made via an OT.

Will do Poll, as she’s coming out anyway re.the bathroom, but fairly sure now, having had a really helpful reply there from Kim,already spoken to the shop and they are quite knowledgable and also fairly close too, so it was really worth asking here! On a roll at the moment, just ordered a motability car too telling hubby that we’ll buy the chair with the money we would have used for the downpayment on the car we were originally going to go for! plus it’s half theprice of the bog standard recliner (which is very nice) that we were going to buy! win win really

All sounding very good maude.

hi maud

glad to have helped.yes in regular furniture shops there are a couple of items that are vat exempt for anyone with disability or mobility issues due to illness or surgery etc. these are lift/rise recliner chairs and adjustable beds. im not sure if a regular recliner chair will count?

i will check on monday when i go back into work.

to get vat off you fill the form in at the point of purchase, its basically name, address etc and a short description of your illness then the shop fills in a description of goods purchased and you sign it.

by the way the leather will be more expensive than fabric.

another good manufacturer is ‘celebrity’

My dad has the recliner with lift and rise as he has severe arthritis. The lift function works very slowly and he holds on to the arm rests and has his walking stick nearby so that when it puts him onto his feet he is ready to stand and walk. They don’t ‘launch’ you forward suddenly. He bought his from a local mobility shop with a recommendation from Social Services so he knew it was a reputable company that wouldn’t just go for the hard sell. The store owner measured him and made sure the seat height was correct for him as dad is very tall. Dad’s chair was then made to measure. I’m afraid I don’t know the manufacturer of his chair but I would imagine it is available to order via mobility shops. Tracey x

Thanks Kim, did speak to the chap and yes VAT free,so all good, The Bergen dual motor leather is favourite at the moment., very happy that it only needs to be 2.5" from the walll even quite like the style of it.which has been a bit of an issue whilst searching for one,so thanks very much, this particular shop also has some very nice what I call ‘real furniture’ and it is somewhere I would never have thought of looking, so good afternoon’s research.

Tracey, thanks I shall be going to try these out before I buy, I just have unfortunate experiences that can put me off certain things …if it can go wrong it is usually when it is me using it! I think these things would happen to whoever was using it at that particular time!

Kim, any recommendations for one that has leg rest which comes up so level with seat please ?

I need to have my legs that high or get really horrible lower leg sensations.

Would really appreciate advice from anyone…

thank you

Laz-boy recliner can be perfct you.

There are lot of brand made recliner chair but I agreed with @jkelly that LAzboy brand is famous in USA country. You get it. You may read reviews on top 10 recliner chair article before get it.Also you you will get review on Laz-boy recliner/ I think this will help you.

Short person here and I find recliners with ottomans are SO MUCH more helpful to actually rock because my feet never reach the ground… These are really cool [link removed by moderator].

Hi, so I had a lady from the council come to see me about getting out and about for exercise classes and to make sure I was ok, she mentioned to me about getting 1 of these chairs, now at the time I didn’t want to go down that line, but she told me that when I did feel like I needed 1, to contact my GP and ask for an assessment and if it was felt that I needed 1 I would properly get 1 for free, as her own father had, so maybe you could check something like that out, just a thought.
